Wir wissen, dass wir unsere Lebensweise grundlegend ändern müssen, um auf unserem Planeten zu überleben. Doch Wissen und Handeln klaffen weit auseinander. Wie kann der notwendige Transformationsprozess in Gang kommen?
Vielleicht gibt es hier Hinweise: 250 Jahre lang – während der sogenannten Edo-Periode von 1603 bis 1868 – wirtschaftete Japan fast ausschließlich auf Grundlage von Sonnenenergie und ohne äußere Ressourcenzufuhr. Bei relativ hoher Bevölkerungsdichte gelang es sogar, Waldflächen und Bodenerträge zu vergrößern. Gleichzeitig entwickelte sich eine äußerst lebendige Kunst und Kultur. Vieles von dem, was heute als typisch japanisch gilt, hat seinen Ursprung in der akuten Energie- und Ressourcenkrise: Tatami Matten, Kimonos, Papierwände und Sushi zeugen von der Notwendigkeit, ressourcenschonend und energiesparend zu wirtschaften. Während heutige Debatten zur ökologischen Transformation oft in Kategorien des Verzichts und der Askese geführt werden, sehen wir hier spannende Beispiele ästhetischer und kultureller Innovationen.

Radio Gardening is a transmission environment archiving radio-making experiments developed in different natureculture sites and specifically at Floating. It brings together live transmissions, bioacoustics experiments, oralities… in dialogue with open technologies and the electromagnetism inherent to all spaces and bodies. The installation incorporates many nuances of environmental activities, allowing its navigation to display our interconnectivity. A daily soundwalk through the exhibition will be offered by the artists, the schedule will be updated depending on weather forecast and it will be available at https://archipel.community/ and https://www.instagram.com/radiogardening/. Number of participants limited to 15, you can register under radio(at)archipel.community or bring your own portable radio.
Radio Gardening ist eine Übertragungsumgebung, in der Radioexperimente archiviert werden, die an verschiedenen NaturKultur Orten und speziell in der Floating University entwickelt wurden. Es versammelt Live-Übertragungen, bioakustische Experimente, Erzählungen… im Dialog mit offenen Technologien und dem Elektromagnetismus, der allen Räumen und Körpern eigen ist. Die Installation bezieht viele Nuancen der Umweltaktivitäten mit ein und ermöglicht es, durch ihre Navigation unsere Interkonnektivität aufzuzeigen. Ein täglicher Soundwalk durch die Ausstellung wird von den KünstlerInnen angeboten, der Terminplan wird je nach Wettervorhersage aktualisiert und ist unter https://archipel.community/ und https://www.instagram.com/radiogardening/ zu finden. Die Teilnehmerzahl ist auf 15 begrenzt, ihr könnt euch unter radio(at)archipel.community anmelden oder ein eigenes Kofferradio mitbringen.
Im ersten Labor geht es um das Sehen und Erkennen, um das Geheimnisvolle und die Kraft von Zeichen – wie sie sprechen, zu wem und worüber. Die Zeichen im Stadtraum lenken die Bewegungen der Menschen, sie informieren oder werben für Dinge und Ereignisse. Wir spielen mit den vorhandenen Zeichen, erfinden Geheimsprachen und probieren mit unserem Körper neue Bewegungen und Wege durch den Kiez aus und erzählen so eine eigene Geschichte unserer Stadt. The first lab is about seeing and recognizing, about the mystery and the power of signs – how they speak, to whom and about what. Signs in urban space direct people’s movements, they inform or advertise things and events. We play with the existing signs, invent secret languages and try new movements and paths through the neighborhood with our bodies, telling our own story of the city. Im Labor drei geht es um Fühlen und Sprechen. Wie sieht eine lebenswerte Stadt aus für alle, die darin wohnen? Neben uns Menschen sind das ein Vielfaches an Pflanzen, Tieren und anderen Aktanten. Was brauchen wir und die anderen, um uns gut zu fühlen? Was lässt uns verwurzeln und wachsen? Wie beeinträchtigt uns die Stadt? Dazu wollen wir pflanzliche und menschliche Stadtpflanzen ins Gespräch bringen und auf den Spuren der Neurourbanistik den Einfluss von städtischem Lebensraum auf Gefühle, Verhalten und Zusammenleben erkunden. Lab three is about feeling and speaking. What does a livable city look like for everyone who lives in it? Besides us humans, that’s a multiple of plants, animals and other actors. What do we and the others need to feel good? What makes us take root and grow? How does the city affect us? To this end, we want to bring plant and human urban plants into conversation and explore the influence of urban habitat on feelings, behavior, and coexistence, following in the footsteps of neurourbanism. Anfang April wurde zum Start der Reihe THE PRESENT RETTET DIE WELT in der Kiezkapelle getrauert, nun folgt das Training in der FLOATING University Berlin für die Rettung des Lebens auf diesem Planeten. Hier, auf dem Gebiet des Regenwasserrückhaltebeckens für den ehemaligen Flughafen Tempelhof wird nicht nur nach neuen Modellen für nachhaltige Stadtentwicklung geforscht. THE PRESENT sucht im zweiten Teil der Trilogie nach Wegen hin zu einer radikalen Solidarität und versucht – mal mehr, mal weniger erfolgreich – sich aufzulösen, um neue Verbindungen zur umgebenden Welt einzugehen. Auf einer performativen Wanderung werden Sie Ihre Wahrnehmung für nicht-menschliche Arten mit einer neuen Form von „Ich sehe was, was du nicht siehst“ schärfen und Ihre Ausdauer mit ein paar Schritten Step-Aerobic stärken können. After the series THE PRESENT SAVES THE WORLD started in Kiezkapelle, now the training moves to FLOATING University Berlin for saving life on this planet. Here, on the site of the rainwater retention basin for the former Tempelhof Airport, research is not stopping at new models for sustainable urban development. In the second part of the trilogy, THE PRESENT searches for ways towards a radical solidarity and tries – sometimes more, sometimes less successfully – to dissolve itself in order to enter new connections with the surrounding world. On a performative hike you will be able to sharpen your perception of non-human species with a new form of “I see something you don’t see” and strengthen your endurance with a few steps of step aerobics. Ein ARCH+ Symposium
Die Ausstellung Architectures of Cohabitation im SCHAU FENSTER verfolgt die Idee, dass menschliche und nichtmenschliche Lebewesen eine untrennbare Gemeinschaft bilden. Um zu nachhaltigeren Städten zu kommen, müssen wir sie auch als Lebensraum für andere Spezies verstehen. Anhand von fünf architektonischen Elementen – Boden, Innenwand, Fassade, Fenster und Dach – wird das Zusammenleben von Menschen und nicht-menschlichen Spezies im, ums, auf und unter dem Haus neu gedacht. Zu jedem Element wird ein 1:1-Prototyp der Cohabitations-Architektur in der Ausstellung präsentiert, gestaltet von den Architekt* innen, Designer* innen und Künstler*innen Animali Domestici, ChartierDalix, Veronika Kellndorfer, Natural Building Lab / TU Berlin und Zirkular sowie mit Architekturprojekten von Eeestudio & Lys Villalba, Husos arquitecturas, Kiyoaki Takeda Architects, RMA Architects, Studio Gang u.a.

Flourishing Biodiversity is a workshop in two parts that invites an affective change in perspective on biodiversity. On a very practical side it offers hands-on knowledge and action in how to make a hot compost. Hot composting creates the conditions for the flourishing of biodiversity and hence for life. Moreover, Flourishing Biodiversity invites to experimentally and holistically activate the nurturing and healing potencies that hot composting offers and to tune into our multi species co-existence.
Flourishing Biodiversity ist ein Workshop in zwei Teilen, der zu einem affektiven Perspektivwechsel auf die biologische Vielfalt einlädt. Er vermittelt praktisch die Kenntnisse und Maßnahmen zur Herstellung eines Heißkomposts. Mit der Heißkompostierung schaffen wir die Voraussetzungen für das Gedeihen der biologischen Vielfalt und das Leben an sich. Darüber hinaus lädt Flourishing Biodiversity dazu ein, experimentell und ganzheitlich die nährenden und heilenden Kräfte der Heißkompostierung zu aktivieren und uns auf unser artenreiches Zusammenleben einzulassen.

Silvia Federici locates the origins of the word gossip as meaning “the spiritual association with ‘kin'” and describes how close communities of women have traditionally been a source of strength. The pejorative understanding of gossip is a strategy that accompanied and contributed to the deterioration of women’s social status: Already in the 16th century, the accusation of being a gossip (read: a witch!) became a reason for the persecution and punishment of women. At that time, gossip went from being a word of friendship and affection to a word of denigration and ridicule. How can we return gossip to its roots today or use it as a strategy to transform exclusion into community, alliance and friendship?
The work of Coven Berlin, Zoë Claire Miller and Lauryn Youden, feeds off an understanding of gossip as the solidarity that implies & generates (female) friendship. gossip is here an (ancient) form of female knowledge production, the multi-part performative evening Witches, Rituals, and Healing explores gossip as a shared ritual.

Day of the frogs
On the first Sunday of the summer, Floating Berlin opens its doors and invites guests, its members and friends to produce and participate in a series of activities, workshops, screenings, and performances.
Descending the concrete path, walking through the trees the Floating wetland unfolds into view. A variety of animals, plants and algae have made this rainwater basin of the former Tempelhof airfield their home and have given rise to a unique landscape: an artificial environment reclaimed by nature, forming a nature-culture site for learning and experimentation. The frogs of Floating are our most prominent co-habitants – this day is dedicated to them.

Please join us for the screening of 8 fantastic short films by a group of Berlin student researchers who have spent a year exploring ‘health’ through the lens of human-environment relations in Berlin. We will draw from critical theories of care and approaches to film-making as a method to put into discussion how Berliners deal with elements of ’urban natures’ that are being framed as both remedy and threat in current urban politics and everyday practices. Our group (led by Dr. Laura Kemmer) has been funded by the Berlin University Alliance (BUA) and has been developed in close dialogue with the BUA Exploration Project “Re-Scaling Global Health. Human Health and Multispecies Cohabitation on an Urban Planet“.
Wir laden Sie ein zur Vorführung von 8 fantastischen Kurzfilmen einer Gruppe von Berliner Studenten, die ein Jahr lang das Thema “Gesundheit” und Mensch-Umwelt-Beziehungen in Berlin erforscht haben. Wir arbeiten mit kritischen Perspektiven auf care/Fürsorge, um zu diskutieren, wie Berliner_innen mit “urbanen Naturen” umgehen die in der aktuellen Stadtpolitik und Alltagspraxis sowohl als Heilmittel als auch als Bedrohung dargestellt werden. Das Regenwasserrückhaltebecken in Kreuzberg ist schön und hässlich zugleich, hier leben Frösche und Enten im verschmutzten Wasser, wurzeln Pflanzen in dünner Bodenschicht und forschen Jung und Alt in der Floating University, wie Pflanzen, Tiere und Menschen besser in der Stadt zusammenleben können. Wenn dieser Ort verschwindet, weil Wohnungen oder Sportplätze doch wichtiger für Berlin sind, was nehmen wir mit? Dazu haben Künstler*innen und Schüler*innen performative Methoden entwickelt, um den Stadtraum in und um das Wasserbecken zu erforschen, sie haben durch magische Brillen beobachtet, mit sirrenden Wäscheleinen gehört und verborgene Zeichen und Geschichten aufgespürt. In “NUR HIER!” kommt das Erlebte und Erfahrene zusammen. Wir erzählen in einem interaktiven Parcours über uns und unsere Möglichkeiten in und mit Stadt.

To anticipate the inauguration of the 6th edition on 29 September, the Lisbon Triennale is going to Berlin to share the reflection proposed by Terra with an international audience. After the participation in the virtual World Architecture Festival and a presentation on national territory at Lisbon City Council’s Paços do Concelho, the German capital has now been added to this itinerary, renewing the commitment to the international dissemination of architecture initiated by previous editions.
The Floating University, presented by Raumlaborberlin in March’s Common Field conference, will be the stage for a conversation between the Lisbon Triennale and the Tbilisi Biennial about their editions in 2022. On the one hand, Terra is a call for change from the current linear and fragmented growth paradigm to a new holistic and circular model. On the other hand, What’s next?, the third edition of the Tbilisi Biennale that opens its doors in October, focuses on the temporality of architectural processes.
At opposite ends of Europe, these two festivals will cross paths in Berlin on July 1 in a debate focused on each institution’s themes and strategies for the construction of shared forums and the role of formats such as Triennales and Biennales as catalysts for change. The panel includes the participation of Cristina Veríssimo, co-chief curator of Terra, Tinatin Gurgenidze and Gigi Shukakidze, who founded the Tbilisi Biennial, and the moderation of architect Elena Markus.
This event is a co-production within the New Cross National Temporality project, a three-year joint programme among cultural entities and academic institutions from seven countries financed by Creative Europe. The Tbilisi Architecture Biennale is the main partner responsible for coordination as well as all cultural activities in Georgia.

(in)tangible transmissions is a sonic excursion into the sphere of electromagnetic waves and aerial transmissions that spread inconspicuously in our urban and natural environment. On the open-air terrain of the Floating University, sound and concert installations, artistic live radio and a workshop invite the audience to radiophonic earth observations and collective ›remote listening‹. With an »Antenna Field«, composer-performer Wouter Jaspers focuses on the myriad of human-made radio frequencies as well as electromagnetic fields from natural sources, while media artist Ioana Vreme Moser with her ›Treetennas‹ of »Arboreal Receptors« encounters this electromagnetic activity from the perspective of trees in coexistence with their underground networks with plants and fungal webs. In addition to receiving and processing signals, we send signals back to the world via an artistic radio programme and mobile radio receivers – live with Kate Donovan and Markus Stein aka DJ Schlucht/D.I.Y. Church in collaboration with Cashmere Radio.

(in)tangible transmissions ist eine Exkursion in die Lautsphäre von elektromagnetischen Wellen und Antennenübertragungen, die sich unmerklich in unserer urbanen und natürlichen Umgebung ausbreiten. Auf dem Open-Air Terrain der Floating University laden Klang- und Konzertinstallationen zusammen mit einem Workshop und künstlerischem Live-Radio zu radiophonen Erdbeobachtungen und zum gemeinsamen ›Fernhören‹ ein. Mit einem »Antennenfeld« widmet sich der Composer-Performer Wouter Jaspers den unzähligen vom Menschen verursachten Funkfrequenzen sowie elektromagnetischen Feldern von natürlichen Quellen, während die Medienkünstlerin Ioana Vreme Moser mit ihren ›Treetennas‹ von »Arboreal Receptors« dieser elektromagnetischen Aktivität aus der Perspektive von Bäumen in Koexistenz mit ihren unterirdischen Netzwerken mit Pflanzen und Pilzgeflechten begegnet. Neben dem Empfang und der Verarbeitung von Signalen senden wir über ein künstlerisches Radioprogramm und mobilen Radioempfängern Signale in die Welt zurück – live mit Kate Donovan und Markus Stein aka DJ Schlucht/D.I.Y. Church in Zusammenarbeit mit Cashmere Radio.

We will use Expressive Arts Therapy and Applied Visual Anthropology methodologies to elucidate
on the complex entanglements of migration phenomena and co-design new modes of participation in AI.

[DE] Am vorletzten Samstag des Sommers öffnet die Floating Berlin erneut ihre Türen und lädt Gäste, Mitglieder:innen und Freund:innen ein, an einer Reihe von Aktivitäten, Workshops, Lesungen und Performances teilzunehmen.
Beim Hinabgehen des betonierten Pfades öffnet sich plötzlich der Blick auf das sumpfige Gelände des Regenwasserrückhaltebeckens. Eine Vielzahl von Tieren, Pflanzen und Algen haben sich hier angesiedelt. Gemeinsam mit den temporären Architekturen der Floating ist eine einzigartige Landschaft entstanden: eine menschgemachte Infrastruktur, zurückerobert von der Natur und gleichzeitig ein Natur-Kultur-Ort zum Lernen und Experimentieren, der ständiger Pflege bedarf.
Am »Day of Waste« stellen wir eines unserer Lieblingsthemen in den Mittelpunkt: Abfall, Abwasser, Materialkreisläufe und Lebensmittelreste und ihr Potential, das im Überfluss vorhanden ist. Gemeinsam denken wir “Waste” neu.

[ENG] On the penultimate Saturday of this summer, Floating Berlin opens its doors once again and invites guests, members and friends to participate in a series of activities, workshops, readings and performances.
As you walk down the concrete path, a view of the marshy terrain of the rainwater retention basin reveals itself. A variety of animals, plants and algae have settled here. Together with the temporary architectures of the Floating, a unique landscape has emerged: a man-made infrastructure, reclaimed by nature and at the same time a nature-culture site for learning and experimenting that needs constant care.
On the “Day of Waste,” we focus on one of our favourite topics: waste, wastewater, material cycles, and food scraps and their abundant potential. Together, we’re rethinking “Waste.”

Talk with Luciana Andrade :
Seeking to dialogue with the daily needs of families from the Brazilian urban peripheries, the lecture/conversation focuses on the urge to criticize the North-eurocentric epistemologies adopted in social housing projects in cities from the Global South. Technical approaches conditioned by conceptual logics distant from the reality of the people who will live in the designed spaces have resulted in violence to their ways of life. We start from the unequivocal recognition of the disparities in the processes of production of the city, which contributes to the great precariousness observed both in the built space of the urban peripheries, as well as at work and in other fields of socio-spatial life, safeguarding the power structures identified in these contexts. In dialogue with “epistemologies of the South” and understanding architecture and urbanism as two among several disciplines necessary to the analysis and proposition of solutions for the housing issue, we will approach particularities of design processes that represent fissures in the hegemonic logic of reflection and production of housing space.
A quarterly format to get in touch with and network the neighborhood. The programme on these two days is implemented in cooperation with various actors from the neighborhood and designed according to the season.

From 20. – 23.09.2022 the international conference “sbe22 berlin – sustainable built environment within planetary boundaries” will take place at TU Berlin by Natural building lab and Habitat unit. An integrated students conference will enable students to exchange ideas with international scientists and present their own projects, as part of the Pop-Up Campus. A programmatic focus will be on approaches and processes of circular building, the handling of recyclable materials and constructions with renewable or natural materials, as well as research on urban and regional questions on commodity and material cycles.
As a part of the student conference, an opening event in a workshop format will be held on the 20.09 at Floating University starting at 6pm, as an open event. The SBE is excited to invite speakers to share critical perspectives on architectural teaching and learning methods in the context of the student conference and share some insights on their own approaches on research methods, model projects bridging practice and teaching, design build processes or self-organized student initiative projects. The open event is an invitation to all people interested to participate in the discussions and workshops with the scientific committee and the participating students of the conference.

LearnPeaks is the symposium of the Floating University’s Learnscapes program – the floating landscape of knowledge production, of un-, re- and co-learning beyond the academia. Building upon the various international collaborations in 2018, the program invites teachers with students – or students with teachers (Academic Beach), as well as teacher-less, self-organised student groups (Free Radicals) to explore academic endeavours on site and collectively shape the learnscapes.
The symposium is an opportunity to bring all participants of the Learnscapes program 2018-2022 together to exchange thoughts and practices. Some participants will offer workshops to convey their practices of (un-, co-,re-) learning. Inviting further guests from abroad is an attempt to contextualise and think further about the Floating University within a broader discourse on unconventional learning practices on the threshold of artistic and urban practice.
The symposium is also understood as an act of gathering and a reason to celebrate, while discussing and debating, holding speeches, engaging in formal and informal dialogues. At a Discursive Dinner, the collective process of food preparation will be accompanied by food for thought and discussion, aiming at generating collective knowledge to bring back to one’s own learning practice and environment.

Radical Rituals 45°N 20°E – 45°N 31°E is the first iteration of this itinerant survey, published by PUNCH Bucharest, edited by Elise Misao Hunchuck and designed by Katharina Hetzeneder. For three weeks last summer, and in the context of Romania, forty five degrees visited and studied several examples of radical practices that transform spatial configurations and contribute to the local public discourse. Over twenty initiatives and agents were documented and gathered in this publication format. This summer forty five degrees accomplished the second iteration across France from the 45ºN 1ºW to the 45ºN 7ºE. During this afternoon at Floating University, Alkistis Thomidou and Berta Gutierrez will present the publication of the Romanian field trip and take this opportunity to bring together agents from the first and second iterations, across Romania and France, and friends and colleagues from Germany, to together reflect on the topics and outcomes from both cases together with the following guests:
– Alex Axinte: Architect & Researcher on urban commons in the context of Romania. Contributor to the book.
– Dagmar Pelger: Architect & Researcher on urban commons in the context of Germany.
– Joanne Pouzen: Architect & Researcher om design and collaborative practices. Director of Maison de L’ Architecture and host of our residency in France for the second iteration of the research.
– Lea Hobson: Architect & Activist. Collaborator during the second iteration in France.
Over the course of 5 days, @spaetispaeti collective organized a week of collective building for the new Floating Compost Station. With this new space, the goal is to establish a venue at the Floating site where decay and renewal, the elementary processes of soil creation, are manifested into a common and joyful action and structure. Together the participants discussed, designed and built the structure but were also invited to implement/perform their own program within the newly built space with the support of the entire group.
On Saturday the newly built structure will be inaugurated and host some parallel programs: a hot compost workshop, a fanzine workshop, and more to be announced!

Bedingungen für die Teilnahme sind:
Sie findet unabhängig von den sich ändernden (Wetter-…) Bedingungen statt. Sie beginnt pünktlich, aber ohne Voranmeldung. Die einzelnen Sessions bauen nicht direkt aufeinander auf, man kann also immer kommen. Alles ist spendenbasiert – es gibt keine Teilnahmegebühr. Es findet hauptsächlich auf englisch statt, aber anderes geht auch.

Conditions of participations are : Space for Practices takes place no matter what happens in terms of changing (weather…) conditions.It starts punctual, but without preregistration. You can come as many times as you want. Its donation based – no participation fee. We can deal with different languages.

The performance is a work in progress conveying and translating what we learned and experienced over two weeks exploring “natureculture pedagogies”, the theme of Contaminations 2022.
Performers include: Laura Ravn, Kenta Naoi, Jules Kühner, Naama Ityel, Arturo Bautisa, David Sanjuan, Fran Edgerly, Panda Ilén, Sherry Ceylan, Jorge Ortiz, Mia Drobec, Luka Agres, and Katherine Ball.

“We find ourselves in a war that has brought us into fundamental opposition to the world,” writes Michel Serres. And apart from a comprehensive re-education, a brainwashing aimed at radically changing our everyday culture, we are, we assume, beyond salvation. A practical implementation of our knowledge regarding the necessity of change is not only hindered by personal convenience, it also encounters powerful economic actors and lobbying associations that use targeted manipulation to keep us on the path of fossil growth capitalism while preaching about the autonomous individual.
The ReEDOcate ME! festival is an artistic response to this. Art is capable of creating spaces of experience that can interrupt toxic patterns of behaviour and change everyday perceptions. Thus, artistic works are predestined to play a decisive role in radically changing the way we live and do business.
The participants of ReEDOcate ME! will undergo a voluntary re-education. They will unlearn toxic life practices and rehearse new, sustainable ones, thus freeing themselves from internalised compulsions of fossil capitalism. For this to happen, it requires cognitive impulses, but above all the sensual experience of openness and the new.
The ReEDOcate ME! will tackle issues of resource conservation not only in terms of aesthetics and content: To compensate for the unavoidable CO2 footprint of the project, we are going to plant a corresponding number of trees in advance. The participating artists will be able to realise their works only within their respective CO2 quotas.
In collaboration with Kyoto Experiment, supported by Hauptstadtkulturfonds Berlin and E.ON Stiftung.
