Rising Seas – a conversation with Vlado Velkov about art in water
With films by Kasia Fudakowski, Dafna Maimon and Yukihiro Taguchi & Chiara Ciccarello.

Kasia Fudakowski and Vlado Velkov independently explore scenarios of rising water levels. Rising sea-levels are a clear consequence of climate change. In Fudakowski’s and Velkov’s work the water is rising for other reasons.
With Word Count, Kasia Fudakowski produces a series of surreal films that depict spoken words as a limited resource in the near future. In the film, a correlation is established between rising sea levels and the number of spoken words; in order to save the world from the coming flood, people are limited to speak 433 words a day (Cage-Law, alluding to John Cage’s 4’33”).
In the floating exhibition Odyssee – initiated in 2017 by Velkov at Lake Möhne (with the Arnsberg Art Association) the water level rises as the number of bathers increase. All artworks exhibited are in water and visitors are encouraged to swim, row or sail from work to work. This year, the water exhibition at Silbersee 2 was continued as part of Ruhr Ding: Klima.
In the evening, additional films by Dafna Maimon, Yukihiro Taguchi & Chiara Ciccarello will be shown, playfully and imaginatively opening the discussion in new directions.

June returns to her family villa in the countryside to fix a leak in the ceiling. While she tries to control her life and environment an ever growing pain in her wisdom tooth escalates. But bodies are porous; they are made and remade in and through their relationship to the material world, and ignoring the body’s sensations – such as pain – further isolates oneself from those reciprocal relations. There are holes everywhere; time, space and bodies leak into and sponge off one another. We are thoroughly entangled – whether we like it or not.

The stop-motion animation documents a one year and a half long self-build housing project in Berlin. It started as the artists moving out of their apartment to built a house out of found materials gathered from around the city and settled down on an empty plot in Kreuzberg. While inviting not only friends but also passersby the activities generated a chain reaction that led to create a self-built village of over one hundred inhabitants and a multicultural community by the end of summer 2014. A fire accident took place in the “village” in autumn 2014, and despite of protest all of the inhabitants were forcefully evicted.

Dolphin Embassy. Virtual tour and interview with Ant Farm

During the Cold War, the Western powers and the Eastern bloc competed not only for the conquest of space, but also for supremacy on the seas. Beginning in 1974, in the climate of this political confrontation, Ant Farm, a legendary collective of artists and architects, developed the Dolphin Embassy, a utopian counterdesign to territorial appropriation and marine exploitation. The floating platform was to establish a community of humans and dolphins, whose interspecies communication and equal coexistence would be made possible by the animals’ high intelligence and the latest media technologies. The project centered on the question of how animals and humans can learn together and connect their knowledge in order to face ecological challenges together.
As part of the Cohabitation project, Christian Hiller (ARCH+) conducts a live video interview with Chip Lord and Curtis Schreier of Ant Farm. Together they embark on a virtual tour through the ideas and spaces of the Dolphin Embassy.
